Well this is a wildly AU, and incredibly angsty (or maybe depressing depending on your mood at the moment) LE/SS offering from me. Therapeutic writing mostly, and not at all betaed. I've been writing bits of this for three days now, though, so I figured I might as well share.

This is the most heart rending story, and I can completely see this scenario having been a part of Severus' life story.

The twist near the end hit me like a cannon shot. If Severus hadn't tried to protect her from the danger he feared she would face if she came to the Muggle pub on Hallowe'en night, if he hadn't sent her note back to James... she would not have been home when Voldemort came to kill them... This broke my heart and touched my soul.

Oh. . . that was wonderful! It fit so perfectly with both characters, so believable and so painful. I truly felt your story could have been integrated into cannon without a hitch, it felt less like fanfiction and more like a missing moment. Beautiful!
