What did he know of teaching? Severus Snape knew the subject of Potions inside and out, but he hadn't a clue of what to do with children, and the First Year students filing into the class now, were most certainly children (had he really ever been that young?).

He let the old familiar walls fall into place. Not the slightest chink would show in his formidable mental and emotional armour. The students would see a rock--a cold, unmovable wizard of considerable power, and vast knowledge.

But the truth was, he was terrified.

For any of my flisties who happen to also be over at DeviantArt, I am throwing a Snape-centric Fan Art/Fan Fiction contest over there.  All details can be found here: http://northangel27.deviantart.com/journal/26399295/ .  Have fun.  There's prizes and everything! :D
northangel27: (snogging)
I made an interesting little discovery yesterday, and I thought I'd share.  To give you a bit of background, I am currently working on a fanfic for a kiriban winner over at DeviantArt.  She requested a Sev/Lily fic with Victorian flower language.  It has sort of been a joy of a prompt, because I just love that sort of thing, but that got me to reading "The Prince's Tale" chapter of DH again.  And the following passage, in particular, stood out:

Lily had picked up a fallen flower from the bush behind which Snape lurked.  Petunia advanced, evidently torn between curiosity and disapproval.  Lily waited until Petunia was near enough to have clear view, then held out her palm.  The flower sat there, opening and closing its petals, like some bizarre, many-lipped oyster.

"Stop it!" shrieked Petunia.

"It's not hurting you," said Lily, but she closed her hand on the blossom and threw it back to the ground.

"It's not right," said Petunia, but her eyes had followed the flower's flight to the ground and lingered upon it.  "How do you do it?" she added, and there was definite longing in her voice.

"It's obvious, isn't it?" Snape could no longer contain himself, but had jumped out from behind the bushes...

It is specificall the description of the flower: The flower sat there, opening and closing its petals, like some bizarre, many-lipped oyster.

which stood out to me.  I was instantly reminded of this:

And all of Georgia O'Keefe's many other fabulous flower paintings, which, I think everyone will agree, were paintings of something more than simply flowers ;-).  I remember the first time I read DH, I thought that a very odd description of a flower: some bizarre, many-lipped oyster..  It stood out to me as odd, but I never really realized how overtly sexual a reference it was until rereading it just the other day.

It tells us alot about Lily, and Petunia and Snape, I think.

Firstly, we have Lily, the one who is wild, and free and unafraid to openly display that most private and beautiful part of herself.  In the text, this would literally, of course, refer to her magic, but magical energy and sexual energy are very closely linked.  When writing fanfic I have always characterized Lily as a highly sexual young woman, without being promiscuous.  Rowling seems to draw many parallels between Ginny and Lily in the books, and Ginny too, was written as being highly sexual as she matured, so I don't think that such an assumption or characterization of Lily is too far away from what the author might have intended.  Lily is also, as per her name, a pure white flower.  A flower that is not only associated with purity and maidenhood, but also very strongly with death.  So we see here, in this one little girl, the union of purity, sexuality, magical power, and even hints at death (necessary for any rebirth of the soul), all laid out before Snape (hiding behing the bush), and he is naturally drawn to her.

I found it interesting that he had obviously been watching her for some time, and it wasn't until the flower magic that he revealed himself.  He stayed hidden even when she flew (or floated depending on your interpretation), which was much more powerful and advanced magic (we learn later in the series) than simply causing a flower to open and close.  If Severus was so enamoured, obsessed by, and drawn to her magical prowess, as some readers have suggested, why did he not leap from behind that bush when she leapt from that swing, displaying that more powerful magic?  Why was it not until he saw that small bud opening to him that he could no longer contain himself and had no choice but to leap from behind that bush and make his presence known?

Personally I think it was that overt display of burgeoning, pure, whole womanliness.  This is a young woman on the brink of bursting full on into what appears to be a very healthy and pure form of female sexuality, and Severus, starved for love, beauty, affection, warmth, a sense of belonging, and so many other things, saw in that small flower, whether aware of it or not, a very potent and powerful display of the divine feminine.  In short, he saw all the things he had ever desired and ever dreamed of, laid bare before him, and not only that, but plucked from the very bush behind which he chose to conceal himself.  And that is significant too, because Lily could have plucked that flower from the lawn beneath her, but instead he took it from that bush, the bush Severus Snape used to conceal himself.

But lets speak of Petunia for a moment.  I have always seen many parallels between Petunia and Severus, and here we see Petunia cautiously curious about Lily's little display, as well as frightened and disapproving.  Lily seems to effortlessly embrace her sexuality, whereas Petunia is curious yet cautious, and even afraid.  I have often suspected that Petunia had been mistreated or abused as a child.  She showed all the signs of it, and being the eldest, and having a deep love for her sister (having a little sister myself it was always very evident that despite everything, deep down Petunia really did love her little sister), would have no doubt done everything in her power to protect her.  My Petunia, the one that has developed in my mind, born from between the lines of the bare bones we are given in canon, is a woman who has born the brunt of some sort of abuse in order to spare her little sister that same suffering.  This is the root of her pain, and bitterness.  She comments upon Lily's display of pure, unsullied magic and sexuality with longing in her voice because she knows it is something that such a girl as she will never know, and she knows that Lily is able to experience it because of what she sacrificed for her.  Every good thing that happened to Lily after that must have seemed like a cruel slap in the face, as I am sure that Petunia felt that it might have been hers had not she had to give up so much for love of a sister.  In my personal opinion Petunia is one of the most tragic characters in the series.  Both she and Severus loved Lily, and sacrificed for her but Petunia's love for her twisted in her gut and only served to make her more and more bitter, whereas Severus allowed that love to transform him into everything Lily silently promised with her flower magic that first day they met.

And that brings us back to Severus.  Severus too, is curious about Lily's magic.  He watches from behind that bush, a parallel to all the walls he has placed around his young and wounded heart, walls that were erected to protect him from the ugliness, neglect and abuse he had probably experienced from the time he was an infant.  But here is this pure Lily, plucking a small piece from out of the wall around his heart and transforming it into something vastly pure and lovely.

It is like she is saying: "See here.  You put up these wall to protect your heart, they are a piece of you, a piece of you that you probably think is dark and ugly, but they awaken this beauty in me.  I can transmute them into love and pure, sensual delight."  She is showing him the beauty that lies within him.  He knew in that moment, that he could never fully conceal himself from her.  She saw through his walls, and not only that, but she was able to take a little piece of that blackness and transform it into something beautiful.  No wonder he was compelled to leap from behind the bush and reveal himself.  He was already laid bare to her, and he knew it.  Why continue to hide?

I am reminded of that scene in the movie version of PoA where Lupin tells Harry that Lily was a person who could always see the beauty in others, especially when they were unable to see it in themselves.  This was always what Lily was to Severus.  Her emerald eyes were like some sort of magical mirror, into which he could look and see all the true beauty of his soul (I am instantly reminded of Alchemy's 'Emerald Tablet' which reveals the key to enlightenment, or transmutation of the soul, but that is a whole different essay for another day ;-)).  I think it terrified him.  I think as he grew older, he fought it all the time, but he could never give it up, because he needed that magical mirror.  He needed to see that part of himself, because it was the one thing that kept him going, the one thing that gave him hope, and hence strength, to do what he knew he needed to do.  And when she left him, the hints of death that her name signified burst forth in him, and it was that death, and her own death later, which truly allowed all of that beauty to be awakened in his soul, until, in the end, his own strength, his own beauty, the strength and beauty that had been there all along, stood on their own.

I could speak of much more here.  I could trace these hints of burgeoning sexuality all the way through their relationship to "Snape's Worst Memory", but I have already gone on far longer than I intended here, so I'll leave that for another time.

Vigil

The small grove where he had been laid to rest was overgrown now.

After all the funerals, and the trials were over, after all the stories had been told a million times, and even the children had grown tired of them, the ‘heroes’ of their war were forgotten. It had only been seven years, and already they were forgotten.

Hermione sometimes wondered if she was the only one tormented with nightmares and haunted with regret. They say that every life contains at least one regret. Severus Snape was Hermione’s.

Every year she came here, just before dawn on the first of May, and she sat, and waited for the sun to rise, feeling guilty at the comfort of its warmth against her skin. He had never seen the dawn on that last morning of his life. It had been denied him because she had been too stupid, or too selfish, or worst of all, too blind, to find a way to save him. She had walked away, leaving him alone.

She would answer for it someday, of that she was certain, but until then she would keep her vigil.

Author's Note: Sigh... The writers block continues. This was just something that I have been writing little bits of off and on for going on two weeks now, just trying to keep the creative gears going. I'm not even really sure what it is, but I thought I'd share it anyway, as someone might enjoy it, and its better than leaving it moldering away on the hard drive. It is LE/SS (they're both 11 years old here), unbetaed, slightly AU, and yes, I know that Bella was not a seventh year when Narcissa was a fourth year, but she is in this story.

Well this is depressing as hell!  I've no inspiration lately.  This little LE/SS drabble came out in minutes.  I have literally no idea where it came from:

Home

“What?”

“What?”

“Why are you looking at me like that,” Lily demanded, pushing a lock of sweaty hair away from her eyes, as she looked up at Severus from where she knelt, scrubbing the floor of her mother’s kitchen.

“’M not looking.”

She just shook her head and went back to scrubbing.  “Fine.  If that’s the way you want it.”

“It’s not.”

“What?”  She stopped scrubbing and looked up at him again, a look of irritation and slight confusion in her eyes.  There were rings beneath them, so dark it looked like she had been punched.

“It’s not how I want it.  This—this isn’t how I want things,” he forced out.

“It’s a little late for that now, don’t you think?”  She sounded tired.

“Maybe…” he acknowledged.  “I’m sorry about your Mum.”

He saw her eyes start to fill, but she looked away quickly and started to scrub at the floor again.  She looked rumpled, and broken, and diminished.  But she was still beautiful, the most beautiful thing in his life.

“Go away, Severus,” she murmured.

“Are you alone here?  Where’s Petunia?”

“Seeing to the funeral arrangements.  You know how she is.  Everything has to be perfect.  I’m fine.  Go home.”

“You are my home,” he whispered before he even realized that the words had left his mouth.

Lily’s shoulders hunched wearily.  “Don’t—please…”

“You don’t like the truth.  You’ve never liked it!” he spat, suddenly angry.  He had just laid his heart bare to her and she had eviscerated him with a single word.

“What truth?!” she shouted back, her eyes suddenly gushing tears, her cheeks flushed red and hot.

He was hurt, and angry; desperate and hungry.  He strode forward, kicking over the bucket of water, soaking the floor, his trousers and hers as he dropped to his knees in front of her, and yanked her into his arms, kissing her hard.  He felt a sob burst against his lips, but then she gave into it.

She let him strip her bare and drown himself in her, there on the slick, cold kitchen floor, and she cried the whole time—the whole damn time.

And he hated her for it

What’s more, he hated himself.

I don't normally rec fics, and definitely don't normally rec slash fics, but if you are a Snupin fan, and you haven't already read "A Wolf and his Bane" by Hogwarts Honey, then you need to.  It is rated NC-17, so you should definitely make sure you are of age, but if you are, and that sort of thing tickles your fancy, you really should try this fic on for size.  It wasn't the first Snupin fic I ever read, but it was the one that sold me on the ship.

For anyone not at DeviantArt, I thought I would share a picture by MarikaArt that just made me fall in love with Severus all over again.  Sigh.... ;-)

Some more Snape/Sinestra. Yea!!! Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mimimanderly and [livejournal.com profile] elethian for reminding me of the joys of this pairing. Definitely rated R for unbridled, schmexy goings on between the two professors in question, though really, there is more talking than there is sex.  That's what happens when you get a stressed out Slytherin and a Ravenclaw together, I suppose...

Falling )

northangel27: (sev/lily together)
This is probably going to be of no interest to anyone but hardcore Severus Snape fans, but I feel the need to whine a little.  I know that awhile ago I bemoaned the slow dying embers of the Severus Snape fandom.  Well, I continue to see it dying out.  And god, how I miss it sometimes.  I miss searching ‘Snape’ on DeviantArt and clicking ‘Newest’ and seeing dozens of new pieces of fan art and fan fics that have appeared there over night.  I miss all the great conversations one used to see on Snapedom at Live Journal (also InsaneJournal), in my LiveJournal, and others, as well.  I just miss discussing all things Snape, gorging myself on glorious fan art and fan fic.  Whine, whine, whine…. ;-)

I’m as guilty as anyone.  I really don’t journal about Snapely subjects over at LiveJournal anymore.  I’ve all but given up on writing Snilly fics (my recent contribution to the LESS Flying Challenge not withstanding), and I know that the dying out of fandoms is natural (for me personally, my interest in a particular fandom seems to last about two years, and this September will mark the two year mark for my obsessive interest in Severus Snape).  But still, I can’t help but feel a twinge of sadness.

I remember the days when I used to write LiveJournal entries like this: http://lilyevans-snape.livejournal.com/40079.html and this: http://lilyevans-snape.livejournal.com/64831.html#cutid1 .  Where did all that love go?  I mean it’s not that the love is gone, per se, but just rather that real life has come along and stolen some of the joy.  If find that sort of unfortunate, really.

I suppose that fandoms develop sort of like relationships.  At the beginning you have all the rush of learning everything there is to know about a new book series, movie, or television series.  You pour over every detail, everything is new and exciting.  There usually tends to be a character that is your favourite, or a pairing, and you learn all about them too.  You theorize on their motivations, on what might have been if this or that had been different.  You are ecstatic over the newness.  And then, with time, you get to know all there is to know, and your feelings start to mellow with familiarity.  I guess one could say that the first spark dies out.

At this point one either has to find something new to love in the fandom, or they move on.  Most people move on.  I’m not sure why, but this has been more difficult for me with the Harry Potter (oh, I mean Severus Snape…) fandom.  Perhaps it is because it has meant to much to me.  It came into my life when I desperately needed it, it has spurred me onto heights of creativity I never thought I would accomplish, it brought so many wonderful new friends into my life!

I can honestly say that I would not have as much confidence in my writing, as much knowledge of Photoshop, or as many wonderful friends all over the world if it was not for the Harry Potter fandom, and specifically Severus Snape.

I can literally say that I owe my life to Severus Snape.  At the time that I started to form an interest in this fandom, I was in one of the worst depressions of my life.  I had lost my sister-in-law very unexpectedly to heart failure a few months prior (she was only 36), and I was still having trouble adapting to living in the United States, where I had moved to marry my husband 2.5 years prior.  I hated my job, and I hated almost everything about my life.

But from the moment that I woke up to the delights of the Severus Snape fandom all that changed.  My outlook on life instantly improved.  I started writing the Alchemist.  I started drawing, and eventually learning how to use Photoshop, a tablet, etc.  I got first one and then another promotion at work.  I met so many wonderful people from all around the world, became members of different online communities, lost almost 30 lbs.  I never realized how much my life changed when I discovered Severus Snape, until I was talking to my husband the other day, and he mentioned that he hoped that Severus Snape never ceased to be a part of my life because it was when he entered it that I truly came alive.

So, now that I sit back and take a look at this, I realized that it started out as a bitch fest, another example of me feeling sorry for myself and ended up as another love letter to Severus Snape.  Huh…  It appears that the Muse still has what it takes ;-).

God, I love Severus Snape…
